Defining Style. Historically, button-front shirts needed their collars attached by hand—an easier way to keep them clean—and served as the pre-cursor to the 21st-century dress shirt. In 1896, our founder's grandson, John E. Brooks, watched a polo match in England when he noticed the players pinned their collars down to prevent flapping. He came back to the States and in 1900, invented the button-down collar oxford shirt, the first with a soft collar firmly attached. Today it remains a foundation of American style.
